On a sunny morning, Tohru Honda, an orphan who is living in a tent, stumbles upon an unfamiliar house on her way to school. As she is investigating, she meets Shigure Sohma, the resident of the house. As they are talking, Yuki Sohma, a classmate to Tohru and a cousin to Shigure, interrupts them.
Yuki suggests that he and Tohru walk to school together, so after they arrive Tohru is "greeted" by the Prince Yuki fan club and then promptly saved by her two best friends Saki Hanajima and Arisa Uotani.
After a late night of work as a part-time janitor, Tohru returns home to her tent. On her way out to wash up, Yuki and Shigure find her and amusingly bring her back to their house for questioning. As they are learning of Tohru's current living situation, she suddenly falls ill with a fever from all the stress. While Shigure is searching the bottomless kitchen for some ice, a landslide occurs and takes Tohru's tent out with it. Once Shigure persuades Tohru that nothing can be done with her ill, she finds herself being tucked into bed at the Sohma house. As she is falling asleep, Tohru tells Shigure the story of the day her mother was killed in an accident. After she falls asleep, Yuki goes to the tent to fetch Tohru's belongings along with the help of a few "friends."
When Tohru wakes up, she rushed toward the tent but is greeted by Yuki who already has her things. Yuki offers the free upstairs room as he takes her things upstairs without waiting for her reply. As Tohru protests, Shigure steps in and mentions that the room won't be free, she will be the brand new Sohma housekeeper!
After Yuki shows Tohru to her new room, there is suddenly a crash through the roof, which in reality is Kyo Sohma. Ready for a fight with Yuki, Kyo challenges Yuki but is stopped by Tohru grabbing him from behind. With this action, Tohru discovers the Sohma's big, well-kept secret!
