Summary: Tohru does as she promises and heads over to the Sohma estate on a snowy day. She is greeted by Momiji and taken into Hatori's office where she notices a lone picture of a lovely woman on the shelf. Tohru starts to worry and Momiji asks if she is ill-he says Hatori can take a look at her but Hatori interrupts saying that he only sees members of the family as patients. Hatori tells Tohru that she should leave Shigure's and go back to her home and cut all ties with the Sohma family because the curse is much darker than she imagines.
Momiji takes Tohru into the garden and gives her a short tour. He tells her that Hatori is nearly blind in one eye because of an accident with Akito. Hatori used to date a girl named Kana and they were going to be married but Akito disapproved and hurt Hatori. Kana blamed herself and eventually Hatori had to erase her memories of him to stop her pain. Tohru breaks down and cries at the end of the story because she realizes how kind Hatori is. Hatori walks out on the porch and sees Tohru standing there and is briefly reminded of a similar scene that happened with Kana. Tohru, shocked to see Hatori, slips and starts to fall off the porch but Hatori dashes in to catch her but he changes into his zodiac form-the dragon or rather, a seahorse. Tohru panics about what type of water a seahorse needs to be in.
This triggers a flashback into the events of Hatori and Kana's relationship. Kana was his assistant and the slowly but surely they fell in love. Even after Kana found out about the zodiac curse, they were still to be married. When they announced it to Akito, he got angry and threw a vase and injured Hatori's eye. Kana blamed herself and was falling ill. At Akito's suggestion, Hatori erased Kana's memories in hopes that she will find a happier life. Hatori awakes from his dream to find Tohru crying over Kana's photo. Once dressed, Hatori asks Tohru the same question he was asked by Kana, What does snow become when it melts? She thinks, and answers the same as she-spring! Shigure comes to retrieve Tohru from the main house and when they are leaving Tohru catches a glimpse of who she thinks may be Akito. On the way home Tohru asks Shigure about the curse to which he replies to just be herself. When they get home the boys have fallen asleep around the kotatsu table waiting for Tohru to get back home. What exactly is the Sohma curse?
