Summary: Meet Tohru Honda, a high school girl living on her own… in the woods… and in a tent. On her way to school she stumbles across a house and goes to check it out and meets Shigure and her classmate Yuki Sohma. Yuki offers to walk with Tohru to school and she bashfully accepts. Upon arrival, Tohru is confronted by the infamous Yuki Fan Club girls demanding to know why she was with Yuki but Tohru is saved by her two best friends Saki Hanajima (Hana) and Arisa Uotani (Uo). At lunch Uo and Hana talk about Tohru paying her own tuition with money from her part-time job and about how Tohru is living with her grandfather since her mother died. Tohru thinks about how angry they would be if they found out she was living in a tent even if it is only temporary. Her grandfather was getting renovations done on the house and he asked Tohru to go stay with her friends, but Tohru didn't want to impose and took it upon herself to live in a tent.
After a long night of work at her part-time job, Tohru goes back to her tent and decides to go down to the river to wash up. Upon exiting, she is found by none other than Shigure and Yuki who were on their way home from eating. Tohru is taken back to Sohma house and Tohru asks if she can rent the land her tent is on. Having worked herself too hard, Tohru falls ill with a fever when Shigure hears from his 'friends' that there had just been a landslide over close to the tent. The three go to check it out, and the tent along with all of Tohru's belongings was buried. Shigure says that they will have to wait until morning to get anything done and they take her back to Sohma house to nurse her fever.
In her futon, Tohru tells Shigure the story of how her mother died. Yuki overhears the story also and then tells Shigure he is going to the tent but he won't be going alone… The next morning, Tohru wakes up to find all of her stuff being brought to her by Yuki. Yuki and Shigure decide that Tohru can stay with them if she does the cooking and cleaning and she isn't given much choice on the matter. Up in her new room there is a sound coming from the ceiling cracking. Enter Kyo Sohma, an orange-haired youth who is there and demanding a fight with Yuki. Tohru tries to stop him by grabbing him from behind when all of a sudden he turns into a cat! Tohru, rushing to get him to a doctor, falls into Yuki and Shigure turning them into a rat and a dog! What kind of family is this and what is Tohru going to do?!
